In addition to our Greenhouses of trellised cucumbers, field cucumbers add greatly to the harvest. Due to sensitivity, greenhouse cucumbers are neccessary to get an early harvest. They, like many of the tropical plants that we are growing require both warm air temperatures and warm soil temperatures to thrive. We already got a round of greens out of these beds in garden 5,. and moved them over to cucumbers a few weeks ago. A number of folks contributed to setting up these beds, planting, and then erecting the cucumber trellis. Wyatt can be seen setting up the wires to hang trellis off of. Incredible to see the growth of these cucumbers in just one week!

We started growing direct seeded field greens this season in Garden 5 (Where the field cucumbers are growing, highlighted above) and then moved to Garden 8. We utilize sileage tarps to help deplete the bank of weed seeds in the soil and provide an environment for even germination of our planted greens. With a tarp covering soil, weed seeds will germinate, however then perish in the heat generated under the tarp from sun, and lack of light. Once this occurs, we remove the tarp briefly to prep the beds underneath, plant greens, and then recover. Once the green seeds germinate we remove the tarp to reveal a weed free bed of greens. Hand weeding often still needs to happen, however the weeds that eventually do come up are typically very manageable.

Updated photos a few days later of the greens pictured. Moisture, sun, and warmth have helped these greens thrive.
