The week has certainly felt like spring/summer and has kept us on our toes. Between the deluge of rain on Friday and the sun over the weekend we have donned full rain gear to keep things moving forward and smeared on the sun screen to help make it all happen. The plants have loved and responded positively to all the recent weather.

More lettuce heads, beans, cabbage, carrots, radishes, turnips, scallions, and parsley made it into the ground. There has been some farm organization and cleaning up in our barn and wash center, and animals have been moved as we clean out pens. In the last few weeks Franconia has been busy splitting rhubarb plants and increasing our space for rhubarb; 63 plants potted up or put in the ground in total! We delivered a large rhubarb harvest to Super Secret Ice Cream yesterday, look for that ice cream on their menu soon! They recently put out an instagram post of our rhubarb, you can check out the content here: SSIC Instagram post

Moving Greenhouses

As some of you know, we have 3 moveable greenhouses some with two spaces and others with 3. We utilize these to help extend our season earlier in the spring and later into the fall. In the spring we plant under the greenhouse then roll it to the next section once the weather becomes more favorable where we plant a summer crop that thrives with greenhouse protection. Then in the fall, roll the greenhouse over something that needs winter protection.

This past winter, scallions appreciated the protection of GH7, the greenhouse right out front along Brook Road. At the end of March when the hard winter weather backed off some, we rolled the greenhouse to a new section where we planted cilantro. Once the cilantro was established and just a row cover for protection was needed, we rolled the greenhouse to the third section where a summer crop of basil will grow.

Season extension is critical to our success as a grower in northern NH!

Below is our tour sign video on moveable greenhouses as well as a slew of videos taken over the years of moving greenhouses in action!
