Spring CSA 2026 Pickup #5

Spring CSA 2026 Pickup #5

Thank you for welcoming our produce into your kitchens over the last 5 weeks. We appreciate your enthusiasm for spring greens, scallions, herbs, and a little more kale. The 5 week spring CSA certainly went by quickly!

Winter Squash and Pumpkins are almost all in the ground! Jav, Shawn, Riley, Elvrald, Wyatt, and Colin all rallied and planted hundreds of plants in the 11 mulched beds Shawn created (See the photo from last weeks newsletter). Delicata, Acorn, Butternut, Kabocha, Pie Pumpkins, and Pumpkins are set up to thrive there this season.

“There” refers to the Oxbow, a piece of property we lease. If you ride on the bike path from littleton out toward Whitefield, you will pass our fields. We Thank the Allard family for supporting us with this lease.

Eventually this will become a true oxbow lake, formed when a river's wide, looping curve (meander) is cut off, creating a U-shaped body of water.

Now available in the farm-stand are these incredible cards created from photos taken here at the farm, by artist Mary Bevilacqua.

We are just amazed by these, and hope you are too!

Thank you for being a part of the Spring CSA for 2026! All those part of the summer CSA season, we look forward to seeing you again next week!

Spring CSA 2026 Pickup #4

Spring CSA 2026 Pickup #4

Phew! Seems like the cold weather (at least for now) seems to be finally on summer holiday. We have delayed planting our field crops due to cold nights and potential frost. We know after many years here in one of the lowest parts of Bethlehem that cold cold weather tends to settle in at the farm. When the forecast says 42-ish, we often see temperatures quite a bit lower which is why Tim circled back to the farm last night and turned GH furnaces back. Last night we saw 34.

Today field planting in earnest has already begun. Wyatt, Jav, Caroline, Mikaela, Jaime, and Addison are out planting peppers and flowers. Zuchinni, Winter Squash, Roma Tomatoes and Cucumbers will hopefully be in the ground by the end of the weekend. Covering GH9 (the tender plastic finally ripped off a few weeks ago) weeding, cover cropping at the oxbow, and some farm organization is also on the docket. We are thrilled to have our full summer team in place and around to help make it all happen.

The succesions of lettuce and greens are finally also coming to fruition and we are psyched to provide you with some lettuce mix this week. As always, we invite you to come walk around the farm and see all the progress at any time.

Photos from the week

The wash center has begun to get busier with more greens, herbs and crops coming in. We hope to bring you at least a few cherry tomatoes next week.

Last Friday Woodland Community School students joined Sam on the farm and helped plant onions and beans after a discussion on the process of germination. The beans above germinated in a mix of vermiculite and pearlite and then were planted in GH3 and some 3” pots. Over the years we have been utilizing this method of starting seeds more frequently, ensuring that each soil block in a tray has a plant.

To germinate, a seed needs Oxygen/Air, Water/moisture, and a Suitable Temperature. They generally don’t require light, however a select few do.

Transformation of GH2: cucumbers now reside in the middle bed.

Shawn laid down a mulch layer with irrigation at the Oxbow, prepping seven 400’ beds for our winter squash.

Addison made sure everyone was on top of planting flowers in our PYO flower garden!

Spring CSA 2026 Pickup #3

With the summer solstice just a month or so away, we have noticed the day light hourss getting longer over each 24 hour period. More plants have made it into the ground, although we are waiting another week to plant our PYO flower garden and Zuchinni and winter squash so we don’t have to potentially figure out how to protect these plants next week during a forecasted cold night.

The sun and water have been encouraging growth not only in our crops, however in the pastures and lawn spaces on the 809 brook road property. Jim has been out mowing already and wyatt again dons the weedwacker. The last thing we need is more dandelion seeds blowing into gardens and greenhouses.

We are excited to bring you asparagus this week along with some familiar green spring goodies.

The pruning continues! Ideally done once a week to maintain and help our tomatoes thrive. We are all excited to see the green cherry tomatoes starting to turn!

After all the weeding and amending one of the first outside crops of spring is popping up. We typically harvest Asparagus through the summer solstice and then stop to give it time to grow and strengthen roots over the summer months.

Peas and radishes enjoying some sun!

When all veggies and greens were safely in the walk-in fridge, Jeannie took a moment to replenish tags.

Some organization and cleaning up has been happening this week. Tradition continues as Wyatt found himself embarking on his first day back for the season activity of weed-wacking the grass around the greenhouses. Beautification!

Jav and Colin with a little help from Tim have been building industrial shelves out back by our pole barn for greenhouse parts and pieces, fence posts, fencing, greenhouse plastic, landscape fabric and any other odds and ends that need an organized home.

We welcomed more piglets this past weekend. Mom is attentive and the piglets are doing their job: eating and sleeping.

Spring CSA 2026 Pickup #2

Spring CSA 2026 Pickup #2

The week has certainly felt like spring/summer and has kept us on our toes. Between the deluge of rain on Friday and the sun over the weekend we have donned full rain gear to keep things moving forward and smeared on the sun screen to help make it all happen. The plants have loved and responded positively to all the recent weather.

More lettuce heads, beans, cabbage, carrots, radishes, turnips, scallions, and parsley made it into the ground. There has been some farm organization and cleaning up in our barn and wash center, and animals have been moved as we clean out pens. In the last few weeks Franconia has been busy splitting rhubarb plants and increasing our space for rhubarb; 63 plants potted up or put in the ground in total! We delivered a large rhubarb harvest to Super Secret Ice Cream yesterday, look for that ice cream on their menu soon! They recently put out an instagram post of our rhubarb, you can check out the content here: SSIC Instagram post

Moving Greenhouses

As some of you know, we have 3 moveable greenhouses some with two spaces and others with 3. We utilize these to help extend our season earlier in the spring and later into the fall. In the spring we plant under the greenhouse then roll it to the next section once the weather becomes more favorable where we plant a summer crop that thrives with greenhouse protection. Then in the fall, roll the greenhouse over something that needs winter protection.

This past winter, scallions appreciated the protection of GH7, the greenhouse right out front along Brook Road. At the end of March when the hard winter weather backed off some, we rolled the greenhouse to a new section where we planted cilantro. Once the cilantro was established and just a row cover for protection was needed, we rolled the greenhouse to the third section where a summer crop of basil will grow.

Season extension is critical to our success as a grower in northern NH!

Below is our tour sign video on moveable greenhouses as well as a slew of videos taken over the years of moving greenhouses in action!

Spring CSA 2026 Pickup #1

Spring CSA 2026 Pickup #1

Folks always ask what we do in the winter and is it a time to relax? We do take our moments to ski and enjoy the snow and maybe relax, however as with every winter on the farm there is plenty of work to do between animal care, delayed projects, plowing, fixing frozen pipes, starting up the seed room, and organizing.

We have a smaller team implementing the plans and making things happen, however starting mid February more staff begins to come back. At this point, all of our greenhouses have been planted or are in process, animals have been shuffled to summer pastures, and our plant sale is in full force. Onions, potatoes (happening as I write this) Kale, Cabbage, Broccolinni, Greens, Peas, radishes, and turnips, have all made their way into gardens outside. As the weather warms we have had more folks at the farm walking around and enjoying our free self-guided tour and admiring all that is happening. WE encourage you to take a moment while here on Thursday picking up your share to walk around and see all that is happening.

Winter Moments

We all got out to enjoy the snow! Even got Evrald out on skis for the first time.

On the super cold nights we shut animals in to ensure protection from particularly the wind. The Pigs always enjoyed when the doors were opened up in the morning.

With the cold, things always seem to break. Our pig grain silo needed a new motor to keep the auger spinning. Tim and Sam battled frozen cow waterers all winter long, finding themselves chipping ice, or fixing broken parts/pipes on those wonderful 0 degree days we had. After some time lugging 5 gallon bucket of hot water, pipes were eventually fixed, and cows were moved to ensure they had what they needed.

We get the the seed room going in January and by the beginning of March had greenhouse #1 and GH2 (There are now 11 greenhouses to keep track of) up and running.

Tim, Colin, Evrald, and Mikaela, under the watchful eye of Addison did quite a bit of planting and transplanting and plant moving to ensure there has been enough space for everything. We now have heat in 7 greenhouses and by mid April all of them were up and running.

GH10 and GH11

In November and December, Sam and Tim ran conduit to GH10 and GH11 for electricity and water and are psyched to have both of them up and running. Tomatoes are already planted in GH10, you can see the propane heater and the backup torpedo heater. All of our heated greenhouses have at least two sources of heat just in case.

GH11

Our now greenhouse 11 used to be part of Lyman View Farm a mainstay at the Littleton Farmers market supplying corn, garlic, and other crops for the north country. When Dick and Linda stopped growing last season we ended up with this small greenhouse which is now home to our seedling sale. We hooked up heat and are in the process of hooking up water to this space and plan on adding more bents to make it a full 96 feet long by the fall.

So the Rocks don’t grow any more this season (like plants, they do grow….we swear) Jav, Evrald and Sam picked rocks out of Garden 7…again. We have 4 sections in this garden rotating between cover crops and cash crops from year to year. Onions, Zucchini, field tomatoes, and field cucumbers are some of the many crops going in Garden 7 out by the blueberries.

Spring Garlic

Spring brings green garlic, also called young or spring garlic. Harvested before the bulb fully matures, it has a mild garlic-onion flavor and tender green stalks. Though it looks similar to spring onions, green garlic has flat leaves and a distinct garlic aroma.

How to Store:
Wrap in a damp paper towel and store in a plastic bag in the refrigerator, or place upright in a glass with a little water.

Cooking Tips:
Use green garlic anywhere you would use garlic or green onions. Its flavor is milder, fresher, and slightly sweeter than regular garlic. The bulb and stalks can be eaten raw or cooked and are delicious in soups, stir-fries, pesto, egg dishes, pizza, and dressings. Tender greens need only light cooking, while tougher stalks should be cooked longer until soft.
